Citizens remain skeptical of Northern Pass - 254 citizens, 646 responses

Aug 25, 2015

Last month, Eversource released a revised plan for the Northern Pass which included burying an additional 52 miles of line. In light of this development, the Live Free or Die Alliance (LFDA) asked Facebook members, “Do you support or oppose the revised proposal for the Northern Pass Project?”

In an exceptionally focused discussion, a total of 92% of respondents answered the question directly or with a concurrence, and of these an 86% majority stating they did not support the revised Northern Pass plan with 14% in favor. Of the remaining respondents, only 6% opted to discuss the subject in broader terms while 2% commented on unrelated issues. In sum, 254 citizens participated in the discussion with a total of 646 responses.

Those opposed to the new plan argued that the project would still have a negative impact on the state. “This is a lose/lose proposition for NH while other states benefit,” one commenter wrote. “When I travel north I like to look trees and such not towers,” another argued. “If they can bury 60 miles, why can’t they bury it all?” a citizen asked.

Supporters of the project countered that it was a sustainable way of meeting the state’s growing energy needs. “We all need energy, and this energy created by not burning anything,” one commenter wrote. “More jobs and less foreign dependency. I’m all for it,” a respondent noted. “I support the revised proposal,” another stated.
