Majority believe school buses should have seat belts – 509 citizens

In November, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) said school buses should be retrofitted with three-point seat belts. Read more about this issue. On November 19, Citizens Count, NH’s Live Free or Die Alliance decided to put the issue to its Facebook members, posting the question, “Should NH school buses have seat belts?”

Participation: 509 participants gave 1,055 responses

A total of 85% of those participating gave a ‘yes or no’ response to the question. The remaining 15% of participants engaged in the discussion but did not give a ‘yes or no’ response. In total, 509 individuals from New Hampshire contributed a total of 1,055 responses or reactions to this question. Click here for details on our methodology.

What Participants Said:

Yes: A majority, at 59% of ‘yes or no’ respondents, were in favor of seat belts on school buses. 

  • “All school buses and public transportation should have seat belts.”
  • “Of all the vehicles on the road, you would have thought a bus carrying kids would be the first to get seat belts.”
  • "If everyone is required to wear them for safety in personal vehicles, then these young kids definitely should be protected  as well."

No: The minority of ‘yes or no’ respondents, at 41%, were opposed to seat belts on school buses.  

  • “The driver is incapacitated [and] then you have a bunch of kids who are trapped for one reason or another with no way to escape.”
  • “Don't forget that the cost is  $10,000 dollars for each of the buses. Taxpayers, start to dig into your pocket.”

Other: As noted above, 15% of those participating did not give a ‘yes or no’ response, instead addressing their comments to related questions and issues. These included:  

  • Personal experience: "We didn't have them when I was a kid and I'm still around."
