Strong majority against motorcyle helmet law - 174 participants, 435 responses

According to preliminary data from the Governors Highway Safety Association (GHSA), motorcycle fatalities in New Hampshire increased over 50% from 2014 to 2015. There were 26 motorcycle fatalities in New Hampshire in 2015 compared to 17 fatalities in 2014. On May 22, the LFDA decided to put the issue to its Facebook members, posting the question, “Should NH reconsider a motorcycle helmet law?”

Results: Yes or No Respondents

Participation:

A total of 92% of those participating gave a 'yes or no' response to the question. The remaining 8% of participants engaged in the discussion but did not give a yes or no response. In total, the LFDA received 435 responses from 174 individuals. (Click here for details on our methodology.)

What Participants Said:

No: A majority, at 92% of ‘yes or no’ respondents, opposed a motorcycle helmet law.

  • “Helmets might make you safer (although it's doubtful above any normal road speed), but in order to remain as free as possible we must prevent laws that are made only to protect ourselves.”
  • “Show me where a helmet is going to save my life when I get hit head on by somebody?”
  • “If a person is stupid enough to not wear a helmet, it's their choice. Government has no business wasting taxpayer money with stupid laws.”

Yes: The minority of ‘yes or no’ respondents, at 8%, supported a motorcycle helmet law.

  • “Too many accidents! Unfortunately, many people must be forced to protect themselves. Helmets, please.”
  • “Those who don't and get in wrecks either end up dead, brain dead or rack up hundreds of thousands of medical debt.”
  • “I've had a helmet save my skull before...I say yes. That's from experience.”

Other: As noted above, 8% of those participating did not give a yes or no response, instead addressing their comments to related questions and issues. These included:

  • Discussing possible mitigating factors behind all auto accidents: “It's been incredibly accepted to talk and text while driving.”
  • Broadening the discussion to include driving behaviors of motorcyclists: “What they should do is arrest every biker that screams past all other traffic, weaves in and out of lanes and rides two abreast. Bikers create more of their own problems than the cars around them.”
  • Expressing interest in statistics regarding accidents: “I hope the stats show who's at fault for these fatal accidents. I'm sure more often than not it's not the cyclists.”
