May 04, 2017

New Hampshire is still the only state the nation that does not require adults to wear seat belts in motor vehicles. Read more about the issue here. On May 4, Citizens Count, NH’s Live Free or Die Alliance decided to put the issue to its Facebook members, posting the question, “Should NH require adults to wear seat belts?”

What Participants Said:

No: A strong majority, at 90% of ‘yes or no’ respondents, were opposed to requiring that adults wear seat belts.

  • “Adults can make the decision for themselves without government thinking for them.”
  • “I wear one. I force everyone in my car to. But I don’t think that they should have to by law.”
  • “This is just a scam to pull people over.”

Yes: The minority of ‘yes or no’ respondents, at 10%, were in favor of requiring that adults wear seat belts.

  • “Yes, because the rest of us have to pay the costs of increased injuries in our insurance and hospital bills.”
  • “Yes, and helmets too. It is not ‘Live free and die’.”
  • “They save lives - both of those that are wearing them and those in the other car.  Nearly every other state requires them and there is no down side.”

Other: As noted above, 5% of those participating did not give a ‘yes or no’ response, instead addressing their comments to related questions and issues. These included:

  • Related questions: “Who pays the medical bills if they are injured and do not carry auto insurance?”
  • Personal views: “I always wear my seatbelt and require anyone riding with me to wear theirs. My insurance, my car, my rules.”
  • Other issues: “If it is truly about safety and not just more government control why not mandate helmets too?”
