New Hampshire’s U.S. Senator Kelly Ayotte spoke out against fellow GOP members this week, criticizing plans to push for a government shutdown over the question of funding for Planned Parenthood.

The effort has been led by Sen. Ted Cruz, a presidential hopeful, following the release of a controversial video showing Planned Parenthood executives talking about the use of donated fetal tissue. Cruz has been urging colleagues to block any funding bill which includes money for the organization.

In a letter from Ayotte to Cruz obtained by WMUR, the NH senator wrote “Given the challenges and threats we face at home and abroad, I oppose risking a government shutdown, particularly when it appears there is no chance of achieving a successful result.”

Ayotte reiterated her opposition to a shutdown in a speech on the Senate floor, noting that a shutdown would not receive sufficient support in the Senate nor could it override a potential presidential veto.

Ayotte was joined by New Hampshire’s Democratic Sen. Jeanne Shaheen, who also stated her opposition to a shutdown.
