According to a report from the Washington Post, Donald Trump’s team is considering New Hampshire’s outgoing Senator Kelly Ayotte for Secretary of Defense.

Ayotte served on the Senate Armed Services and Homeland Security Committees. She does not have any experience in the military, although her husband is a veteran.  In the Senate she took strong positions against the nuclear deal with Iran and closing Guantanamo Bay prison.  She also worked with Sen. John McCain to cut waste at the Pentagon.

According to an editorial in the Washington Post, “Trump would get credit for selecting a mainstream, serious person. … Ayotte would be an ideal personality to smooth out the relationship between Trump and the generals whom he routinely insulted.”

Ayotte withdrew her support for Trump this fall, after tape showed Trump speaking lewdly about grabbing women.  However, Ayotte has signaled she would be open to a position in Trump’s administration.

It’s unclear if Trump could move past his disagreements with Ayotte.  This past summer he said, “I don’t know Kelly Ayotte.  I know she’s given me no support — zero support — and yet I’m leading her in the polls. I’m doing very well in New Hampshire. We need loyal people in this country. We need fighters in this country. We don’t need weak people. We have enough of them.”
