Forbes recently released its "Best States for Business" rankings, and New Hampshire is #36 in 2016.

The ranking examined business costs, labor supply, regulatory environment, economic climate, growth prospects, and quality of life.

New Hampshire was most hurt by business costs, which ranked #46. In its brief analysis, Forbes cited New Hampshire's high energy costs. However, Forbes did not criticize New Hampshire for its business taxes, which Republican lawmakers have targeted for cuts. According to Forbes, "One advantage the state has over its neighbors, however, is on the corporate taxes front, with Moody’s Analytics' figures placing New Hampshire 20% below the national average."

New Hampshire scored best on its quality of life, ranked #19. That rank included very low poverty and crime rates.

Massachusetts was the only state in New England to beat New Hampshire in the overall Forbes ranking, coming in at #19. Connecticut, Maine, Rhode Island, and Vermont all ranked in the forties.

Utah was ranked first, and West Virginia was ranked last.
