On Monday, October 5 Democratic Governor Maggie Hassan announced she will run for U.S. Senate in 2016, challenging incumbent Senator Kelly Ayotte.

In her announcement, Gov. Hassan highlighted the following accomplishments during her two terms as Governor:

  • Freezing tuition at state universities and decreasing tuition at community colleges
  • Expanding Medicaid coverage to 40,000 residents
  • Repairing infrastructure
  • Cutting taxes for research and development and small businesses
  • Balancing the budget while "creat[ing] a business-friendly environment that has NH's unemployment rate at the lowest level since 2008."

Looking forward to a term in the Senate, Gov. Hassan pledged a bipartisan approach.  She also vowed to protect Medicare and Social Security benefits, and criticized "politicians playing games with Planned Parenthood."

The New Hampshire GOP was quick to respond.

"[Gov. Hassan's] irresponsible and partisan budget veto left vital programs and resources in limbo, including funding to fight the heroin epidemic and critical support for the elderly and homebound," said Republican State Committee Chairman Jennifer Horn.  "Hassan’s playbook of more taxes, more spending, and bigger government has not worked for New Hampshire families and small businesses. Her failed leadership has brought Washington-style gridlock to the governor’s office, and the last thing New Hampshire needs in the Senate is another rubberstamp for more partisan politics."

In her own press release, Sen. Ayotte said, "I welcome Governor Hassan to this race and look forward to a very spirited campaign. We have lots to talk about, including confronting the challenges facing our state and how we can best deliver results for New Hampshire families."
