Higher bet limit in charitable gaming?

When does charitable gaming become problem gambling?  That’s a question lawmakers may ask this session when they consider HB 169, a bill that would more than double the bet limit at charitable gaming venues.

Right now any single wager at a charitable gaming venue is limited to $4, except in poker games.  For poker and similar games, a player can purchase no more than $150 chips in a game.

HB 169 would increase the limit on wagers from $4 to $10.

The Lottery Commission expects higher wagers will make charitable gambling more popular with players.  According to their note on the bill, they expect an annual increase in state revenue of about $800,000.  The charities that benefit from gaming would also see an increase in funds.

Opponents are likely to question if raising wagers will make gambling more addictive and damaging.  In the past, such concerns have stopped New Hampshire from authorizing a for-profit casino.

Do you think New Hampshire should raise the bet limit at charitable gaming venues?  Let us know in the comments.
