On Wednesday, May 11 the New Hampshire House of Representatives voted to kill a bill that would have banned the possession of powdered or crystalline alcohol.

Palcohol, which manufactures powdered alcohol, plans to market the product to hikers and other outdoor enthusiasts who want to enjoy alcohol on a trip without carrying the extra weight.

Over twenty states have banned powdered alcohol because of concern over misuse.

Speaking on behalf of the Senate Commerce Committee, Sen. Donna Soucy wrote, "if used incorrectly, powdered or crystalline alcohol can be very dangerous and toxic. … The Liquor Commission, Department of Safety and the Attorney General support [a ban on possession]."

Legislators in the House noted that the Liquor Commission already has the power to stop the sale of powdered alcohol in New Hampshire. A ban would therefore be unnecessary and difficult to enforce.
