Maine Community Health Options is leaving New Hampshire’s Affordable Care Act insurance exchange.

When they started providing insurance for New Hampshire consumers in 2015, Community Health Options received far more claims than they expected. They are leaving New Hampshire to cut their losses.

11,581 individuals in New Hampshire are insured through Maine Community Health Options. They have from November 1 through December 31 to select a new insurance plan from four other insurers that participate in New Hampshire’s Obamacare marketplace.

The departure of Maine Community Health Options reflects a problem in many states: insurers are ending their participation in the Affordable Care Act insurance marketplaces due to higher than expected costs. This leaves consumers with fewer choices for insurance and less competition to offer lower prices.

New Hampshire is doing better than most states, however, with four insurers still in the marketplace. According to the New York Times, about 17% of Americans will have only one insurer to choose from next year.
