This Memorial Day we at Citizens Count, New Hampshire's Live Free or Die Alliance honor the service men and women who gave their lives for our freedom.

While Memorial Day comemmorates those who died in military service, the holiday also reminds us to honor veterans living and working in New Hampshire.  Here are some of the veterans programs the New Hampshire Legislature has considered this year:

HB 636 would establish a state Department of Veterans Affairs.  A House committee is keeping that bill for work over the summer.

HB 652 would authorize veterans courts, which offer veterans with mental illness and/or substance use disorder the opportunity to complete court-monitored treatment rather than go to jail.  That bill already passed the House.  The Senate will vote on the bill May 31.

SB 168 would double the optional tax credit towns may give veterans.  The House voted to kill that bill in April, partly because the state broadened eligiblity for the veterans property tax credit in 2015.
