How does New Hampshire fare when it comes to building positive relationships? The first nationwide study of the issue used survey data from over 125,000 adults to determine which states had the highest and lowest rates of attachment anxiety—or “clinginess”—and of avoiding attachment altogether.

New Hampshire came in nearly dead center in the ranking, at 25th. But when it came to regional trends, New England was all over the map, from Vermont, which ranked 4th for the lowest rates of attachment anxiety and avoidance, to Rhode Island at 46th, with the other states scattered in between.

Mississippi ranked top for the lowest rates of attachment anxiety and avoidance, with North Dakota coming last.

The researchers also looked at U.S. Census data on marriage and divorce rates, as well as other information on mortality, well-being, and even temperature and weather patterns.

In states that ranked low for attachment anxiety and avoidance, marriage rates were reportedly higher.
