New Hampshire compared to New England, U.S.

New Hampshire is the third most-populated state in New England, after Massachusetts (6.9 million) and Connecticut (3.6 million).

New Hampshire also has the second highest population growth in New England. From 2010 to 2017, New Hampshire’s population grew by 2%. Massachusetts’ population grew by 5%. All the other New England states saw less than 1% growth.

However, the population in the United States as a whole grew more, by 6%.

Why is NH falling behind other states in population growth?

The slower population growth rate in New Hampshire is due in large part to an older population. About 18% of New Hampshire’s residents are over age 65, compared to 16% nationwide. Meanwhile only 19% of New Hampshire’s residents are under age 18, compared to 23% nationwide.

In simple terms, New Hampshire has more retirees than young families in the state.

There are many proposals to entice more working-age people to the Granite State. Elected officials have considered increased funding for higher education, job training programs, family and medical leave, and commuter rail.

Racial diversity is also a concern

Some advocates also suggest New Hampshire could entice more workers to the state by increasing racial diversity. New Hampshire is 94% white, compared to a national average of 77%.

The Governor's Advisory Council on Diversity and Inclusion is holding listening sessions around the state to determine how residents experience inclusion and/or discrimination in the Granite State. So far the listening sessions have provided anecdotal reports that New Hampshire feels unwelcoming to minorities, and that government holidays and school curriculum fail to celebrate diverse communities.
