In 2016 the New Hampshire Legislature passed a law that does not allow campaign clothing or pins inside polling places. There was already a law against campaign signs, palm cards, and other political literature inside any building where voting is taking place.

The law is intended to protect voters from any intimidation or influence to vote one way or another.

A voter will never be turned away for wearing a campaign sweatshirt or similar item of clothing, but election moderators will ask the voter to cover up.

The law does come with a $1,000 fine, but the Attorney General's office told the Concord Monitor they do not plan to issue any fines.

Opponents argue the law is a violation of free speech. They argue there is an important difference between actively campaigning inside a polling location and simply wearing what you choose while voting.
