New route for Northern Pass

The Northern Pass transmission line project has announced a new route that buries 52 miles of lines in the North Country.

The route also shortens some towers by decreasing the total amount of electricity from 1,200 megawatts to 1,000 megawatts.

According to the Northern Pass website, the project "will also create a $200 million ‘Forward NH Fund’ dedicated to supporting initiatives in tourism, economic development, community investment, and clean energy innovations, with an emphasis on North Country opportunities."

Northern Pass officials say these changes "are part of a balanced solution that provides clean, affordable energy our region needs and unique benefits to New Hampshire while also addressing the concerns about potential view impacts."

The Society for the Protection of New Hampshire Forests, an opponent of the Northern Pass, would still like the Northern Pass to bury all transmission lines.

According to the Society’s website, "there are still communities and landowners, from Deerfield to Stewartstown, who will be negatively impacted by the more than 125 miles—two-thirds of the route--that they propose to build as overhead lines. … Given that the new technology is apparently allowing Northern Pass to propose burying another 52 miles without increasing the overall project cost of $1.4 billion, there would seem to be opportunity for more burial along roadways."
