According to new data from the U.S. Census Bureau, New Hampshire had the eighth highest median income in the United States in 2015.

New Hampshire also had the fifth highest growth in median income from 2014 to 2015.

The data came from the latest American Community Survey.

Massachusetts was the only state in New England with higher median income.  New Hampshire had the highest growth in median income in New England.

“Over the last several years, we have worked together in New Hampshire across party lines to make progress for our people and businesses, and the 2015 American Community Survey reaffirms that New Hampshire continues to move forward,” said Gov. Maggie Hassan

Overall Maryland had the highest median income in the United States, while Montana had the highest growth in median income.  Mississippi had the lowest median income and New Jersey had the lowest growth in median income.

Median income needs to be weighed against the cost of living, however.  According to the Bureau of Economic Analysis, the cost of goods and services in New Hampshire is one of the highest in the U.S. Younger New Hampshire residents also have the second highest student loan debt in the U.S.
