On Tuesday, September 12 the New Hampshire Department of Employment Security released unemployment figures for August.  The seasonally adjusted unemployment rate was 2.7%, a decrease over last month and last year.

The national adjusted unemployment rate for August was 4.4%.

At first glance low unemployment seems like a good thing.  Wages tend to increase when there are fewer people competing for jobs.

However, New Hampshire's very low unemployment rate means it is hard for businesses to fill jobs and grow.

New Hampshire is facing worker shortages in several particular fields, include health care and manufacturing.  With fewer unemployment claims, New Hampshire has more revenue from unemployment taxes that could potentially be spent on job training for these fields.  Click here to learn more about proposals to fund worker training programs.
