Gov. Maggie Hassan recently vetoed HB 1266, a 2016 bill that would have legalized firecrackers in New Hampshire.

“The New Hampshire Association of Fire Chiefs and the New Hampshire Fire Marshal’s Office oppose House Bill 1266, and I share their public safety concerns,” said Hassan.  “According to estimates by the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, firecrackers have previously accounted for up to 20 percent of all fireworks-related injuries nationwide.”

Supporters of the bill argued that the amount of gunpowder in firecrackers is much lower than it used to be, making them no more dangerous than fireworks.

“The firecrackers ban is a clear example of government overreach, and it puts New Hampshire pyrotechnics distributors at an economic disadvantage by prohibiting the sale of a popular form of fireworks that is already legal in neighboring states,” said New Hampshire Republican State Committee Chairman Jennifer Horn.
