Personal medical marijuana plants?

A bill (HB 593) being considered by the Senate Health and Human Services Committee would allow qualifying New Hampshire medical marijuana patients, or their registered caregivers, to grow and transport cannabis plants.

The bill establishes regulations that specify how many plants those qualifying may grow or transport, as well as how much marijuana they may possess at a given time. Only those patients who reside more than 30 miles from an alternative treatment center would be permitted to grow cannabis under this law.

Supporters of such legislation argue that patients should have the right to grow their own cannabis as excessive distance to an alternative treatment center may prove a hardship. They also argue that allowing patients to grow their own cannabis gives them control over sourcing and quality.

Opponents counter that allowing private citizens to grow cannabis could fuel the illegal drug trade and presents challenges in the areas of regulation and enforcement. Additional concerns are expressed that private cultivation could increase home invasion and other related crimes.
