In Nashua, school officials are considering updating the district’s policy on cell phone use in the classroom and plan to seek input from teachers on whether smartphones have been problematic or beneficial to the learning environment.

The current policy states that if there is “misuse” of a cell phone in the classroom and it is deemed disruptive, it may be confiscated and a parent can retrieve it.

Some teachers have expressed frustration at the ambiguity of the current policy, citing disruptions in the classroom.

Several studies, including one in 2010 conducted at UNH, indicate cell phone usage in the classroom adversely affects student concentration.

Others, however, contend that smartphones enhance learning environment for both students and teachers. in Ohio, for example, teachers use cell phone technology to connect students with educators abroad while in the classroom.
