Rep. Elizabeth Edwards is sponsoring a 2016 bill that would remove the criminal penalty for consensual prostitution among adults.

The bill does not provide for any regulation or licensing of prostitution.

Supporters of legal prostitution argue that the government should not interfere with consensual sex between adults, no matter the circumstances.

Opponents argue that prostitution contributes to the spread of potentially dangerous diseases, including HIV. Others argue that prostitution creates too many opportunities for exploitation and human rights abuses.

New Hampshire's laws against prostitution gained some attention last spring when ten men, including some men involved in politics, were arrested for soliciting prostitutes.
