On July 8 New Hampshire Representative James Spillane posted on Facebook: "It is high time that we recognize the BLM [Black Lives Matter] movement for what it is, a domestic terror group."

Opponents were quick to point out that the leaders of Black Lives Matter do not advocate violence.

“[Black Lives Matter] is a movement for justice, equality and community,” Dartmouth Professor Reena Goldthree recently told NHPR. “It is not a movement that in any way celebrates or promotes the murder of anyone—police officer, civilian, black, or white.”

Civil rights activists in the 1960s were also called a threat to public safety, yet leaders such as Martin Luther King, Jr. are now celebrated.

Critics of Black Lives Matter argue that the movement lacks the clear goals of historic civil rights movements. Without direction, the anger over racial disparities may be more likely to turn violent.

Spillane also noted, "Make no mistake that if someone started a 'White Lives Matter' movement it would immediately be classified as a domestic terror group."
