The Cheshire Coalition for Tobacco-Free Communities has worked with nine towns in western New Hampshire to ban smoking at outdoor recreation areas, such as parks.

Many other New Hampshire towns have ordinances that restrict smoking in public outdoor spaces. For example, the town of Derry bans smoking at beach areas, and Dover prohibits smoking at athletic fields.

Supporters of smoking bans argue that citizens enjoying public spaces - particularly children - should not have to put up with unhealthy second-hand smoke.

Others point out that smokers often leave behind the litter of cigarette butts.

Opponents argue that smoking outside does not harm other people and is a matter of personal liberty.

If towns are concerned about litter, they can impose stricter fines.
