Would you support a water ban in your town?

With much of southern New Hampshire classified by the U.S. Department of Agriculture as being in a moderate drought, several towns and water systems have instituted restrictions on water use.

Such bans often include prohibiting or limiting use of water for car washing, watering lawns, or washing down outdoor surfaces such as sidewalks. Penalties for breaking the ban can include fees or even being cut off from water systems.

Though official drought status is confined to the southern half of the state, much of the rest of New Hampshire is considered to be abnormally dry, with no significant precipitation in the forecast.

Supporters of a water ban argue that it is necessary to ensure that sufficient water continues to be available for more important household uses, and argue that penalties are justified to ensure compliance.

Opponents counter that recommendations for voluntary reductions in water use are sufficient, and question the logistics or practicality of enforcing a ban.
