Low unemployment but a need for more workers in NH
New Hampshire’s current unemployment rate is 2.7%. That’s one of the lowest in the United States.
A low unemployment rate means most people are able to find work – but it also means businesses have trouble finding qualified employees.
Where are NH’s workers?
Part of the problem is New Hampshire’s aging population. The state is attracting more older residents than young workers.

There are many ideas to attract more qualified workers to New Hampshire, including:
- State-funded job training programs
- College scholarships and student loan assistance
- State-funded family and medical leave
Tourist businesses in New Hampshire have also expressed concern that the federal government has not allowed enough foreign worker visas for seasonal jobs this summer.
NH still better than other New England states
New Hampshire is still doing better than other states in New England, however. New Hampshire’s labor force grew by 1.7% over the past year, compared to just 1.5% in Vermont and 0.9% in Maine. Those states both have an unemployment rate of 2.8%.
Massachusetts’ workforce grew by 4.0% over the past year, but that state also has a higher unemployment rate of 3.5%.
