Not enough millennials in office?

According to a recent study, New Hampshire legislators are, on average, the oldest in the U.S.

The average age of a legislator in New Hampshire is 66, compared to a national average of 56.

The study was a joint project of the National Conference of State Legislatures and Stateline.

Millennials, baby boomers, and older residents have different perspectives on the most important issues facing the state.   For example, in a recent University of New Hampshire poll 83% of residents age 18 to 34 supported marijuana decriminalization.  In contrast, only 53% of residents over age 65 supported decriminalization.

These differing opinions may mean that millennials’ opinions are not adequately represented in an older legislature.

On the other hand, legislators have different philosophies when it comes to representing voters, and some older legislators may actively try to represent millennial opinions when voting.

An older legislature is also partly a consequence of low voter turnout among millennials, who are much less likely to vote than baby boomers.

Do you think having an older legislature impacts the laws passed in New Hampshire?  Comment below!
