Next Thursday, February 2 the House of Representatives will vote on a bill that would require all charter school teachers to have a valid New Hampshire teaching credential.

Under current law, only 50% of charter school teachers must be certified.

Bill supporters argue that all teachers in New Hampshire should be held to the same high standards.  Even if someone is an expert in their field, they may not have the ability to impart that knowledge to students.

Bill opponents argue that charter schools are supposed to innovate in teaching methods.  Charter schools also have a motive to hold their teachers to high standards, since parents can choose to withdraw students from a charter school at any time.

A majority of the House Education Committee recommended the full House votes to kill the bill.
