Rep. Joe Hannon is leading an effort to allow needle exchanges in New Hampshire.  

Needle exchange programs allow drug users to turn in dirty needles in exchange for clean ones.  Ideally needle exchanges reduce the spread of diseases such as HIV and hepatitis C.

On Thursday, May 5 the Senate amended a bill intended to legalize needle exchanges in New Hampshire, instead establishing a study commission on the issue.

On Friday, June 16 Gov. Chris Sununu signed SB 234 into law, allowing needle exchanges in New Hampshire. 

SB 234 allows community health organizations to collect needles with trace amounts of drugs and dispense clean needles, without any state funding involved.

With little fanfare, the Executive Council approved another state contract with Planned Parenthood and the Equality Health Center (formerly known as the Concord Feminist Health Center).
