The state drug task force is considering a range of legislation aimed at fighting the state’s growing opioid and heroin addiction problems. Among the bills is one sponsored by Sen. Nancy Stiles which would require public school students in grades K-12 to receive substance abuse prevention education every year as part of their health education curriculum.

After nearly three weeks of meetings, the Joint Task Force on Heroin and Opioid Epidemic issued a final report, sorting roughly 20 proposals into three categories: those that would be expedited for a full legislative vote by mid-January, those to be considered ‘early’ in the regular session, and those that would be submitted through the regular processes.

Starting July 1, Medicaid covers treatment for substance use disorder in New Hampshire.

Prior to that date, only participants in New Hampshire's expanded Medicaid program were eligible for substance use disorder treatment.

Earlier in November, a summit was held in NH for medical providers that focused on the drug crisis and what is being done to stem it. According to the state's Medical Examiner, 302 drug overdoses have been recorded so far in 2016.

Alcohol fund provides money for addiction treatment

Last week the House Finance committee voted to repeal the Alcohol Fund and instead appropriate money for addiction treatment from the General Fund of all tax revenues.

The Alcohol Fund, established in 2000, sets aside up to 5% of liquor tax revenue for addiction treatment and prevention.
