Hassan prohibits discrimination on gender identity
On Thursday, June 30 Gov. Maggie Hassan issued an executive order prohibiting discrimination on the basis of gender identity.
The executive order applies to employment in state government, the administration of state programs, and state contracts. It does not impact local governments or private employers.
"By making clear that gender identity and gender expression are protected in the State’s anti-discrimination policies, this executive order helps ensure that New Hampshire state government welcomes and incorporates the talents and contributions of all of our citizens," said Hassan.
New Hampshire is the only state in New England without a law prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity.
Opponents argue that the laws prohibiting discrimination based on sex and sexuality are sufficient protection for citizens.
When New Hampshire last considered a law prohibiting discrimination based on gender identity - in 2009 - Rep. Nancy Elliott wrote, "New Hampshire already has the term ‘sexual orientation’ in its anti-discrimination laws, it does not need to add 'gender identity and expression' to it as well, as it will only cause confusion and open itself up for countless lawsuits."
