On Thursday, November 16 the federal Department of Energy approved the presidential permit for the proposed Northern Pass Transmission Line project.

While the Presidential permit is key to the project moving forward, the Northern Pass still has several hurdles to jump through, including the state Site Evaluation Committee.

Supporters of the Northern Pass argue that the project will lower electricity rates and decrease the reliance on natural gas by injecting renewable energy into the New England electricity grid.

Opponents argue the project will primarily benefit electricity customers in Massachusetts and will hurt New Hampshire by disrupting views in the North Country.
