Election Day is held on the Tuesday after the first Monday in November. Several states, including New York, Kentucky, and Hawaii, have made the date a civic holiday. Private sector employers are not required to give employees a day off on state holidays, but many opt to do so. Proponents of making Election Day a holiday argue that encouraging businesses to give workers the day off would help increase voter turnout and make for a stronger democracy. Opponents counter that there is no evidence that making Election Day a holiday increases participation in elections, and argue that low voter turnout should be addressed in other ways.
