This week, the US Senate passed legislation that repeals much of the fundamental elements of the Affordable Care Act, also known as "Obamacare." Sen. Jeanne Shaheen (D) opposes the repeal bill while Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R) supports the legislation.

Highlights of the legislation include repealing the expansion of Medicaid adopted by 30 states and many of the law’s tax increases. It also cuts funding for the Prevention and Public Health Fund and eliminates risk adjustment programs from insurance companies that lose money because of the law.

Opponents of the repeal bill in NH argue that it would revoke health care coverage for more than 44,000 low-income families currently covered under expanded Medicaid in the state. The repeal would also eliminate tax credits for 28,000 who receive coverage through the federal marketplace.

Repeal supporters, however, note that the bill includes increased funding for substance abuse treatment and mental health. The repeal bill also eliminates the employer mandate to provide health insurance that many argue has resulted in lost jobs.
