This month the U.S. Supreme Court struck down a federal ban on sports betting, opening the door to sports betting in New Hampshire.

The Granite State must pass a law to regulate sports betting before it becomes legal. That law would cover everything from the minimum age for betters to whether betting is allowed on school sports. A law would also set up a tax structure.

This year’s legislative session is nearing an end, so it’s unlikely that New Hampshire will authorize sports betting in 2018. A legislator will most likely introduce a bill in 2019.

In writing the majority opinion of the Supreme Court, Justice Samuel Alito summarized both the pros and cons of legal sports betting:

“Supporters argue that legalization will produce revenue for the states and critically weaken illegal sports betting operations, which are often run by organized crime. Opponents contend that legalizing sports gambling will hook the young on gambling, encourage people of modest means to squander their savings and earnings, and corrupt professional and college sports.”
