An end to same-day voter registration?

In an interview with NHPR, Governor-elect Chris Sununu said that New Hampshire should repeal same-day voter registration.

“It’s not about fraud and a rigged system, that nonsense. It’s really just about making sure that our rules are clear, that they’re unambiguous, and that people can believe that as a full-time resident of the state of New Hampshire, your vote isn’t being watered down by someone who’s drive-thru voting, drive-by voting,” said Sununu

“Drive-by” voting became a popular term this year as the state legislature considered a bill that would require voters to live in-state at least thirty days before voting. Supporters of that bill argued that “drive-by” voters, such as some campaign workers, declare New Hampshire as their domicile for a short time, then leave the state after the election.

Supporters of same-day voter registration maintain that it protects the right of every citizen to vote. They argue that the state already guards against drive-by voters by sending a mailer to everyone who registers on Election Day; if the mailer is not signed and returned, the state investigates. The American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire also says there is no evidence of drive-by voting.

Same-day voter registration also allows voters who are already registered to correct any information that has changed, such as their address.

Thirteen states and Washington, D.C. allow voters to register at the polls on Election Day.
