State to issue medical marijuana cards

On Tuesday, December 22 the New Hampshire Department of Health and Human Services (DHHS) announced it will begin issuing medical marijuana cards to qualifying patients.

Originally DHHS said it would not issue medical marijuana cards until dispensaries opened in New Hampshire, mostly likely in the spring of 2016.

That policy change is most likely in response to the court case of Linda Horan, a New Hampshire resident with a terminal illness who sued the state for a medical marijuana card, which will allow her to purchase marijuana in Maine. The court ruled in her favor.

Opponents argue that allowing patients to purchase marijuana out of state will undermine New Hampshire's ability to control the safe distribution of marijuana.

Supporters argue that patients should not be prevented from accessing legal treatment just because the state has fallen behind its original timeline for opening dispensaries.
